Have you ever read a cookbook written by ghosts? 'Ghost written' by Mary Ann Winkowski and David Powers, "Beyond Delicious: The Ghost Whisperer's Cook Book" is full of "more than 100 recipes from the Darly Departed". The 2001 Ghost Whisperer cookbook is said to include actual recipes "bequeathed to Mary Ann through spirits of great cooks who have passed on." Along with each ghost recipe is a story of how the cookbook author came to acquire the recipe.
Paranormal investigator Mary Ann Winkowski is a consultant to the CBS series Ghost Whisperer and is often a guest on TV and radio shows. In addition to the Ghost Whisperer Cook Book, Winkowski has authored other books including "When Ghosts Speak" Understanding the World of Earthbound Spirits," "The Book of Illumination" and "The Ice Cradle."

The Ghost story: A woman named Leslie inherited a pharmacy from her grandparents. The little pharmacy was quaint, old fashioned and even had an old soda fountain. Leslie tried to sell the shop but was sure there were no buyers because it was haunted. She called on Mary Ann Winkowski. It was then that the real-life ghost whisperer met Queenie, who worked for the woman's grandparents. She cooked, made lunch sandwiches, pies and cakes. Queenie gave Winkoski the recipe for the Malted Butterscotch Bars below.
Serving Size
Serves: 16 living people
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup powdered malted milk (not chocolate)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup shortening
- melted
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup nuts
Instructions
- Sift flour; measure and sift with malted milk, baking powder and salt.
- Add melted shortening to sugar. Add unbeaten eggs. Mix well. Add milk, vanilla, nuts and flour mixture. Mix well and pour into well-greased pan. Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
- Mark into bars while hot. Remove from pan when cool.
